EXP Underwater Pelletizing System

High-performance underwater pelletizing technology for stable, automated and efficient production of thermoplastic polymer pellets, masterbatches, engineering compounds, elastomers, hot melt materials and biodegradable polymers.

EXTRUTEX Engineering & Manufacturing: Designed according to Austrian engineering principles and manufactured in Nanjing and Shanghai, China, the EXTRUTEX EXP system combines controlled underwater cutting, process-water management and centrifugal drying into one integrated pellet production solution.

Advanced Underwater Pelletizing for Continuous Polymer Production

The EXTRUTEX EXP Underwater Pelletizing System is designed for modern polymer processing lines where stable pellet geometry, reliable production, efficient cooling and automated operation are essential. The system transforms a continuous polymer melt into individual pellets directly at the die face, while controlled process water immediately removes heat and transports the newly formed particles through the downstream separation and drying stages.

Compared with conventional strand pelletizing arrangements, underwater pelletizing provides a highly compact production route. The polymer does not need to travel through a long air-cooling or water-bath section before reaching the cutting equipment. Instead, the melt is extruded through a thermally controlled die plate and cut directly in the underwater cutting chamber. This short process path allows the pelletizer to maintain consistent production conditions while reducing the overall footprint of the pelletizing section.

The EXP platform is suitable for both standard thermoplastics and demanding specialty materials. Depending on the polymer formulation, die configuration and required particle size, the system can be engineered for applications ranging from relatively small laboratory or pilot outputs to industrial production capacities of several tonnes per hour.

EXTRUTEX also integrates the pelletizing unit with its EXTW Process Water and Drying System. This creates a coordinated production package in which cooling water, filtration, temperature control, pellet separation and centrifugal drying are managed as part of the same process. The result is a cleaner, more stable and easier-to-operate pelletizing line.

Main Components of the EXP Pelletizing Line

1. Polymer Melt Diverter and Flow Control

The melt diverter section provides a controlled transition between the upstream extrusion or compounding equipment and the underwater pelletizing head. During startup, stabilization or material changeover, the polymer flow can be managed before entering the active cutting chamber.

This arrangement is particularly valuable for automated production because it provides operators and the control system with a defined method for handling the melt during transitional operating conditions. Once melt temperature, pressure and flow become stable, the material is directed toward the heated die and underwater cutter.

2. EXP Underwater Pelletizer

The EXP pelletizing unit is the heart of the system. Polymer melt is forced through precisely manufactured openings in a heated die plate. Immediately after emerging from the die, the melt is cut into individual particles inside the water-filled cutting chamber.

The direct underwater cutting principle provides rapid cooling and helps maintain consistent pellet dimensions. The cutter and die plate are engineered according to the characteristics of the processed polymer, required throughput and target pellet size.

A thermally controlled die plate is particularly important when processing materials that are sensitive to temperature changes. Maintaining the correct die temperature helps reduce the possibility of melt freezing inside the die holes and supports reliable production during startup and continuous operation.

3. EXTW Process Water System

The EXTW Process Water and Drying System manages the cooling water required by the underwater pelletizer. Water leaving the cutting chamber carries both heat and pellets toward the separation section. The pellets are removed while the water continues into the treatment circuit.

The process water is filtered and returned to the circulation system. A controlled heat-exchange circuit can remove excess thermal energy and maintain the required water temperature. Stable water temperature is essential for consistent pellet formation, especially during long production runs.

4. Pellet Separation

After leaving the cutting chamber, the pellet-water mixture enters the separation section. The useful pellets continue toward dewatering and drying, while oversized agglomerates or irregular particles can be separated from the main product stream.

5. Centrifugal Pellet Dryer

The centrifugal dryer removes residual surface water from the pellets before they are discharged to conveying, storage, weighing or packaging equipment. High-speed centrifugal movement transports the pellets upward while moisture passes through dedicated screens.

The dryer is designed for practical access, allowing operators to inspect and clean the process area during material or color changes. This is especially important for masterbatch and specialty-compound production where contamination between formulations must be carefully controlled.

How the EXP Underwater Pelletizing System Works

  1. Startup and melt stabilization: The polymer melt is initially managed through the flow-control section while the extrusion process reaches stable temperature, pressure and output conditions.
  2. Die preparation: Once the melt becomes continuous, the heated die plate is brought into the correct operating condition and the polymer is directed toward the pelletizing head.
  3. Underwater cutting: The polymer exits through the die openings and is immediately divided into pellets by the rotating cutter inside the water chamber.
  4. Rapid cooling and transport: Process water removes heat from the freshly cut pellets and carries them away from the cutting zone.
  5. Pellet separation: The pellets are separated from the main water stream and any undesirable oversized material can be removed.
  6. Pre-dewatering: The majority of process water is removed before the pellets enter the centrifugal drying stage.
  7. Centrifugal drying: Remaining surface moisture is removed through centrifugal force and screen separation.
  8. Final discharge: The finished pellets leave the dryer and can be transferred to conveying, storage, packaging or further processing.
  9. Water recirculation: Process water is collected, filtered, cooled and returned to the pelletizing circuit for continuous operation.

Engineering Advantages

Reliable Die Temperature Management

The die plate is thermally managed to keep the polymer melt in a suitable processing condition. This helps reduce premature freezing inside the die openings and supports stable startup.

Wear-Resistant Components

Die plates and cutting components can be selected according to the abrasiveness and processing characteristics of the polymer formulation.

Continuous Water Filtration

Filtration keeps the circulating process water cleaner and helps protect the stability of the cooling circuit during continuous operation.

Controlled Water Temperature

A dedicated cooling circuit and heat-exchange arrangement help maintain the process-water temperature within the required operating window.

Easy Cleaning

Accessible pelletizing and drying components simplify routine cleaning and support faster material or color changes.

Reduced Floor Space

Integrating underwater cutting, water treatment and pellet drying creates a compact downstream solution compared with longer conventional pelletizing layouts.

Efficient and Responsible Process Design

The EXP system is designed around a recirculating process-water concept. Instead of continuously consuming large quantities of fresh water, the cooling water is collected, filtered and returned to the system. Heat is removed through the dedicated cooling circuit so that the water can continue supporting the pelletizing process.

This approach reduces unnecessary water loss and supports cleaner industrial production. The controlled process also reduces the amount of manual handling required around the pelletizing section, contributing to a safer and more organized production environment.

Energy efficiency is supported through compact equipment design, controlled process-water circulation and optimized drying. The actual energy consumption depends on throughput, polymer type, process temperature and the selected equipment configuration.

Integration with Complete Extrusion and Compounding Lines

The EXTRUTEX EXP system can be integrated downstream of single-screw extruders, twin-screw compounders, recycling extruders and specialty polymer processing lines. The pelletizer can become part of a complete production system including raw-material dosing, extrusion, melting, mixing, filtration, underwater pelletizing, drying, conveying and packaging.

For high-output engineering-plastic and masterbatch applications, the system can be matched to the upstream extruder capacity so that the pelletizer does not become a production bottleneck. For smaller production lines, compact EXP configurations provide a practical solution where floor space and operating simplicity are important.

The water-treatment section can also be configured according to production requirements. Filtration capacity, cooling performance, water circulation and dryer configuration are selected based on the expected throughput and the thermal characteristics of the polymer being processed.

Maintenance and Production Flexibility

A reliable pelletizing system must be easy to inspect, clean and restart. EXTRUTEX therefore emphasizes practical access to the pelletizer, process-water system and centrifugal dryer. This is particularly important in plants producing several formulations or colors on the same equipment.

During planned maintenance, operators can inspect the die plate, cutter components, water filtration equipment and dryer screens. The modular process arrangement also allows individual components to be serviced without unnecessarily disturbing the complete production line.

For masterbatch, biodegradable polymers and specialty compounds, material changeover can be a significant part of production planning. A compact and accessible process design helps reduce downtime and allows the operator to return the line to stable production efficiently.

EXTRUTEX — Austrian Design, Global Manufacturing

EXTRUTEX combines Austrian-oriented engineering and industrial machine design with manufacturing capabilities in Nanjing and Shanghai, China. The objective is to provide polymer-processing equipment that combines practical engineering, flexible configuration and competitive manufacturing.

For each underwater pelletizing project, the final configuration should be selected according to the polymer formulation, throughput, melt temperature, pellet dimensions, required drying performance and upstream extrusion process. EXTRUTEX can engineer the EXP and EXTW system around these parameters to create a complete and coordinated pelletizing solution.

From compact production systems to high-throughput industrial pelletizing lines, the EXP platform is designed to provide reliable underwater cutting, controlled cooling, efficient drying and consistent pellet production.
