In injection molding, the screw and barrel are the heart of the plasticizing unit. They control melting quality, shot consistency, cycle time, energy consumption, and the final part quality. When the screw flights wear, the barrel bore enlarges, or the non-return valve loses sealing efficiency, problems appear immediately: longer cycle times, incomplete filling, black spots, color variation, and higher scrap rates.
EXTRUTEX specializes in manufacturing high-performance replacement screws and barrels for virtually every brand of injection molding machine in the world. We produce both classic nitrided versions and advanced bimetallic versions according to the customer’s material and wear requirements.
Unlike continuous extrusion, injection molding is a cyclic process. The screw must efficiently melt the polymer during recovery, then act as a plunger during injection while the non-return valve seals the melt. Clearance between screw and barrel, flight geometry, compression ratio, and surface hardness directly affect plasticizing rate, melt temperature homogeneity, and residual stress in the molded part.
Common wear problems include abrasive wear from glass fiber, mineral fillers or flame-retardant compounds, corrosive attack from PVC, halogenated materials or certain engineering plastics, and adhesive wear under high injection pressure. Once the radial clearance increases beyond design limits, plasticizing efficiency drops sharply and process stability is lost.
Made from high-quality nitriding steel (38CrMoAlA / DIN 1.8509 or equivalent). After precision machining, the components undergo deep gas or ion nitriding to achieve surface hardness ≥ HV 900–1000 with a case depth of 0.5–0.8 mm. Ideal for general-purpose thermoplastics (PP, PE, PS, ABS, PMMA, etc.).
For highly abrasive or corrosive applications we offer full bimetallic solutions. The barrel is lined with a high-wear alloy (nickel-based or tungsten-carbide based) applied by centrifugal casting or HIP technology. Screw flights can be hard-faced with special alloys or manufactured from powder metallurgy tool steels. These versions deliver significantly longer service life when processing glass-filled, mineral-filled, flame-retardant, or recycled materials.
We supply general-purpose, barrier, mixing, vented, and high-speed plasticizing screws. Compression ratios, L/D ratios (typically 18:1 to 24:1), and mixing sections are optimized according to the resin and machine size. Non-return valves (check rings), tip assemblies, and nozzles can also be supplied as complete sets.
EXTRUTEX maintains dimensional data and reverse-engineering capability for almost all major injection molding machine manufacturers worldwide. We regularly produce exact-fit or upgraded screws and barrels for the following brands:
Whether your machine is a small electric Arburg or Fanuc, a large hydraulic Haitian or Yizumi, or a high-performance ENGEL or KraussMaffei, EXTRUTEX can supply the correct screw and barrel – nitrided or bimetallic – according to your process needs.
