PVC Pressure Pipe

Develop around the target pressure class, pipe standard, resin grade, dimensions, and long-term hydrostatic performance.

Ingredient Dosage approach Purpose
PVC resin 100 phr Base polymer; select a suitable pipe grade
Ca/Zn stabilizer package Dosage validated with the supplier Thermal stability
Lubricant system Supplier and trial dependent Fusion, flow, and die release balance
Processing aid As validated Fusion and melt behavior
Pigment / TiO2 As required Color and opacity
Calcium carbonate Only where permitted and validated Filler; assess effect on pressure performance
Pressure-pipe compliance must be established by testing against the applicable standard. Do not assume that a generic recipe or a high-output extrusion result proves pressure suitability.

Standard vs. Premium Development

"Standard" and "premium" describe development objectives, not universally standardized grades. The correct option is the one that meets the required product specification with consistent processing.

Feature Standard development Premium development
Raw materials Suitable grades meeting the specification Grades selected for tighter consistency or specific performance targets
Stabilizer Compatible package for the application Optimization of heat stability and color retention
Impact / processing aids Meet required performance Optimize toughness, fusion, surface, and process window
Fillers Loading validated through testing Particle grade and dispersion optimized where useful
Foam structure Meet target density and cell quality Further optimize density consistency, cells, skin, and dimensions
Quality control Tests required by specification Additional testing and tighter process controls where justified
Cost optimization: reduce total cost only while preserving required performance and compliance. Do not assume that adding more filler or reducing modifier is acceptable without testing.

PHR Batch Calculator

Enter the PVC resin batch weight and additive dosages in parts per hundred resin (phr). The calculator converts each dosage into ingredient weight. It does not validate whether the recipe is technically suitable.

Ingredient Dosage (phr) Calculated weight
PVC resin 100 100.000 kg
Stabilizer 4.000 kg
Impact modifier 6.000 kg
Processing aid 1.500 kg
Titanium dioxide / pigment 4.000 kg
Calcium carbonate 5.000 kg
Internal lubricant 0.500 kg
External lubricant 0.300 kg

Total formulation: 121.300 phr

Total batch weight: 121.300 kg

Non-resin ingredients: 21.300 kg

PVC resin in total compound: 82.44%

Formula: ingredient kg = PVC resin batch kg x ingredient phr / 100. If a commercial additive package already contains lubricants or co-stabilizers, account for that package before adding separate ingredients.

Mixing, Extrusion and Quality Control

Mixing and handling

  • Check resin and additives for moisture, contamination, and lot consistency.
  • Follow the approved ingredient sequence and mixer supplier's operating procedure.
  • Control hot-mixer temperature, mixing time, and cooling conditions.
  • Ensure pigments and fillers are properly dispersed.
  • Record batch numbers, process settings, and quality results.

Extrusion development

  • Set process conditions for the actual extruder, screw, die, material, and target output.
  • Monitor melt temperature, torque, pressure, fusion, and surface defects.
  • Watch for plate-out, discoloration, roughness, and dimensional drift.
  • Adjust lubrication only after checking fusion and stabilizer compatibility.
  • For foam products, additionally validate expansion, cell structure, density, and skin quality.

Validation tests

Test area Purpose
Thermal stability Resistance to degradation during processing
Fusion and processing behavior Compound fusion and extrusion consistency
Impact and tensile tests Mechanical performance
Hydrostatic testing Required pressure-pipe validation
Dimensional inspection Wall thickness, diameter, profile dimensions, tolerances
Weathering and color Outdoor appearance where applicable
Electrical and flame tests Applicable conduit / cable-management product requirements
Foam density and cell inspection Density, uniformity, surface, and structural consistency
Compliance matters. Drinking-water pipes, pressure pipes, drainage products, electrical conduits, and architectural profiles can be subject to different standards and regulatory requirements. A recipe alone does not establish certification or compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one formulation work for every rigid PVC product?

No. Pipes, profiles, electrical conduits, foam boards, and ceiling panels have different processing and performance requirements. Develop and validate each formulation for its intended application.

Does more impact modifier always improve performance?

No. The result depends on modifier chemistry, compatibility, dispersion, fusion, and the balance between toughness and stiffness.

Can calcium carbonate reduce formulation cost?

It can change material cost and stiffness, but excessive or unsuitable filler can reduce impact performance and compromise product compliance. Validate the grade and loading.

Does a flame-performance additive make electrical conduit certified?

No. The complete product must pass all applicable tests and meet the relevant requirements.

Can EXTRUTEX help develop a formulation?

A development request can establish the product, target standard, resin grade, additive package, and equipment conditions needed to plan laboratory trials and product validation.
